“David Coplan est spécialiste d'histoire sociale, anthropologue et musicologue. David Coplan is anthropologist and musicologist. He published various studies on music from Southern Africa : In Township townight, In the Time of Cannibals: The Word Music of South Africa's Basotho Migrants and The entertainment media, African performing arts, and urban African identity in South Africa.”

Il a enseigné dans plusieurs universités sud-africaines (Witwatersrand, Capetown), Américaines ( New York, Columbus, Bloomington) et ghanéennes (Universal Training College, Somanya, Ghana) et dirige le département d’anthropologie sociale de l’Université de Witwatersrand. Il a publié plusieurs études sur les musiques d’Afrique australe dont «~In Township townight~», «~In the Time of Cannibals: The Word Music of South Africa’s Basotho Migrants~» (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology), «~Eloquent knowledge: Lesotho migrants’ songs and the anthropology of experience~» et «~The entertainment media, African performing arts, and urban African identity in South Africa~».
