At one point in its history, this album/compilation was titled You Tube Top Hits. Much like the content of a previous post on music in Saharan Africa being distributed through cell-phones, Shangaan electro is generally consumed through social media and played on whatever technology is available. Thankfully the bass was produced with the intention of being played on a PA for dancing, and not cellphone speakers . . .
If you are at all familiar with the music, then no explanation necessary. If you are not, well, my description will do it no justice. Frantic beats, soulful vocals, hypnotizing samples . . . which all sounds generic until you hear the music itself.
Made significantly more popular in the last few years thanks to a string of releases on Honest Jon’s in the UK.
